In a bold move that fuses nostalgia with a contemporary message, Public Enemy has reimagined their 1998 hit “She Got Game,” originally part of the Spike Lee film soundtrack for *He Got Game*. The revamped track is now a stirring anthem celebrating women’s empowerment, featuring an array of notable artists and a compelling connection to Olympic sports.

A Modern Empowerment Anthem

Originally showcased in a film that followed Denzel Washington’s character, Jake Shuttlesworth, the updated version of “She Got Game” introduces a powerful intro sampling feminist icon Gloria Steinem’s famous speech “Address to the Women of America.” The track features contributions from rapper Flau’jae, Retina MC, and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana, alongside singer and bassist Blue Detiger and rock guitarist Grace Bowers. Notably, US Olympic swimmer Elizabeth Beisel also makes an appearance, reinforcing the track’s celebration of female athletes.

Proceeds from the single will support the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Black Music Action Coalition’s Female Fund, aligning with Public Enemy’s commitment to social justice and advocacy.

Inspired by Olympic Spirit

The inspiration behind this reimagined version springs from Flavor Flav’s ties to the sports world. In 2024, he sponsored the US Women’s Olympic Water Polo team and is set to serve as the official hype man for the women’s Team USA Bobsled and Skeleton at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Flav captures his enthusiasm, stating, “The partnership is a blessing. It’s cooler than Cool Runnings. It’s Coolest Runnings,” referencing the beloved 1993 film about the Jamaican bobsled team.

A Legacy of Social Commentary

Public Enemy, formed in 1982 by Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X, and Professor Griff, has long been a beacon of social consciousness in hip-hop. Their signature sound, characterised by Chuck D’s commanding voice and Flav’s distinctive delivery, has influenced generations. In a previous interview, Chuck D described their dynamic, saying, “I have a loud, booming voice beyond anybody else’s… we’re the Keith Richards and Mick Jagger of hip-hop.”

Their original *He Got Game* soundtrack garnered critical acclaim and peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard 200, solidifying their legacy in music. Their most recent album, *Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025*, released in June 2023, continues to reflect their commitment to impactful storytelling.

Why it Matters

The reimagining of “She Got Game” is more than just a nostalgic revival; it serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for women’s rights in sports and beyond. By intertwining music with advocacy, Public Enemy not only amplifies the voices of female athletes but also inspires a new generation to challenge societal norms. This track stands as a celebration of strength, unity, and the importance of representation, making it a significant addition to the cultural landscape at a time when these discussions are more crucial than ever.
