The Hockey Hall of Fame has officially added the pucks used for the gold medal-winning goals by both the men’s and women’s teams at the Milan Cortina Olympics to its permanent collection, following a generous donation from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). This announcement was made public on Wednesday, a day after American forward Jack Hughes expressed his desire to keep the puck from his overtime goal, which secured victory for the U.S. men’s team, as a gift for his father.

A Celebration of Olympic Triumphs

In a statement released to the Associated Press, the Hall of Fame outlined its commitment to preserving these historic artefacts for fans around the globe. “These artefacts are preserved, exhibited, and shared with fans worldwide through our museum and international outreach programmes, ensuring that defining Olympic and World Championship moments remain protected and accessible to the global hockey community,” the statement read. The Hall expressed profound respect for the athletes who create such unforgettable moments on the ice and reiterated its dedication to safeguarding their achievements responsibly.

The U.S. team achieved a remarkable feat at the Milan Cortina Games, sweeping gold medals in men’s, women’s, and Paralympic sled hockey categories, each time triumphing over Canada in the finals. Women’s hockey player Megan Keller also scored a golden goal in overtime, with that puck now similarly enshrined in the Hall of Fame’s collection.

Memorabilia from the Ice

Hall of Fame President and CEO Jamie Dinsmore commented on the importance of these donations, stating, “These donated items represent defining moments on the world’s biggest stage and carry powerful stories of national pride and hockey history at its highest level.” He highlighted that the upcoming display for the 2026 Olympic Games will allow visitors from around the world to connect with these unforgettable moments.

In addition to the Olympic pucks, the display will feature over 70 notable items, including sticks from U.S. forward Brady Tkachuk and gloves from teammate Jack Eichel, as well as jerseys from Canadian captain Sidney Crosby and Swedish forward William Nylander. These artefacts are part of a longstanding tradition, as the IIHF has provided the Hall with significant memorabilia since the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.

The Legacy of Hockey

The Hockey Hall of Fame emphasises its mission to collect, preserve, research, exhibit, and promote artefacts, images, and stories that reflect hockey’s rich legacy worldwide. Established to honour the sport’s history, the Hall of Fame serves as a custodian for those who have made significant contributions to the game, including iconic moments like Sidney Crosby’s legendary ‘Golden Goal’ in 2010 and Natalie Darwitz’s winning goal puck from the 2008 World Championships.

Why it Matters

This initiative highlights the significance of hockey not just as a sport, but as a vital part of cultural identity and national pride. By preserving these key moments, the Hockey Hall of Fame ensures that future generations can appreciate the triumphs and stories that define the game. The inclusion of these pucks in the Hall’s collection reinforces the importance of celebrating the athletes who create history on the ice, while also promoting a deeper engagement with the sport on a global scale.
