Ceremonial treasures once cherished by Queen Elizabeth II are set to go under the hammer, with all proceeds earmarked for Cancer Research UK. The auction, taking place in March, will feature six significant items, including the iconic Diamond Jubilee ‘diamond’ and the millennium torch, both of which hold deep sentimental value and historical significance.

A Legacy of Love and Service

The collection, created under the guidance of the late Queen’s pageant master, Bruno Peek, encapsulates memorable moments from her reign. Each piece is not merely an artefact but a symbol of the joy and unity the Queen fostered during her numerous celebrations. Among the highlights is the Diamond Jubilee ‘diamond’, which was prominently displayed at the Tower of London before being used by the Queen herself during the 2012 celebrations.

In addition to the Diamond Jubilee piece, the auction will include the millennium torch, which was lit to herald the arrival of the year 2000, and the 90th birthday torch from Windsor Castle, which marked the Queen’s milestone in 2016. Also featured are the Golden Jubilee torch from 2002 and the Commonwealth Nations Globe from the Platinum Jubilee held in 2022. Each item tells a story and celebrates the resilience and spirit of the nation during significant historical events.

A Personal Connection

Bruno Peek, who served as the Queen’s pageant master for four decades, recalls his time working closely with the monarch with fondness and gratitude. “The Queen and the royal family showed me such kindness over the years,” he reflects. Peek, who was instrumental in orchestrating global beacon tributes for the Queen’s jubilees, has a treasure trove of memories, including one where he had to nudge the Queen to help light the Diamond Jubilee beacon. In that moment, her willingness to participate amidst technical difficulties revealed her approachable nature.

The last time Peek saw the Queen was during the lighting of a beacon for the Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. “We all understood the Queen wasn’t well and we weren’t expecting her to make it,” he recalls. Yet, her appearance was a testament to her unwavering dedication to her duties. “The last thing she ever said to me was ‘Thank you Bruno,’” he reminisces, a moment that he cherishes deeply.

A Noble Cause

Peek, who has received numerous accolades for his contributions, including being made an OBE and later a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, is passionate about ensuring these items serve a greater purpose. Given that both King Charles III and Catherine, Princess of Wales, have undergone cancer treatment, Peek is motivated to use the auction to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. “I could never have sold them for personal gain,” he states firmly.

The items are expected to fetch between £20,000 and £30,000 each at the virtual auction, which will be held at Bonhams. This initiative not only preserves the legacy of the Queen but also supports a cause that affects countless individuals and families across the nation.

Why it Matters

This auction represents more than just the sale of historical memorabilia; it embodies the spirit of community and hope in the face of adversity. By directing the proceeds to Cancer Research UK, it underscores the importance of collective action in the fight against cancer, a disease that touches so many lives. The items serve as a reminder of Queen Elizabeth II’s commitment to her people, and through this auction, her legacy will continue to inspire and support those battling cancer today.
