Quiz, the popular fashion retailer, has unfortunately plunged into administration for the second time in under a year, leading to the immediate redundancy of 109 staff members from its head office in Glasgow and its distribution centre in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. As the company grapples with ongoing economic challenges, hundreds more jobs hang in the balance.

A Troubling Trend for High Street Retailers

Interpath, the appointed administrators, have confirmed that while Quiz’s 40 stores in the UK and seven concessions in Ireland will remain operational as options for the business are assessed, the retailer’s website will be shut down. The redundancies primarily affect employees based at Quiz’s headquarters and distribution centre. Notably, the concessions located within New Look and Matalan stores are not included in the administration process and will continue to trade.

This latest development comes just a year after Quiz last entered administration in February 2025, a situation that saw the brand swiftly acquired by Orion, a subsidiary of the founding Ramzan family. That deal preserved the Quiz brand and 42 stores but resulted in the closure of 23 locations and affected around 200 jobs.

Economic Pressures and Shifting Consumer Habits

Alistair McAlinden, joint administrator and head of Interpath in Scotland, acknowledged that the current climate has been particularly challenging for UK retailers. “With Quiz the latest retailer to fall into administration, there’s no doubt it’s been a tough start to 2026 for the UK high street,” he stated. The company faced weaker-than-expected sales during the crucial Christmas period and has struggled with a combination of rising costs and changing shopping behaviours.

Geoff Jacobs, another joint administrator, urged potential buyers to come forward quickly, stating, “Any parties with an interest in acquiring the stock, store operations and infrastructure of Quiz should contact us as a matter of urgency.” He also reassured affected employees that support would be provided during this difficult time.

Changes for Customers

As part of the administration process, Quiz has announced that gift cards and credit notes will no longer be honoured. Customers who have made online returns will need to visit a physical store for exchanges but will not be eligible for cash or card refunds. Those awaiting refunds for returns made online are advised to reach out to their credit or debit card providers for assistance.

Why it Matters

The repeated struggles of Quiz underscore a broader crisis facing the UK retail sector. As consumer habits shift in response to economic pressures, the fate of high street brands hangs in the balance, impacting thousands of employees and communities dependent on these businesses. The ongoing challenges highlight the urgent need for innovative solutions to sustain the retail landscape in a rapidly changing world.
