This year, however, I’m flipping the script. Rather than lamenting my single status, I’ve organised a pub outing with two of my married friends, and I couldn’t be more excited. There’s something deliciously cheeky about running into their husbands and announcing, “Guess where I’ll be on Valentine’s Day? Out with your wife!”
The look of surprise on their faces is priceless. In the comfort of their long-term relationships, they’ve almost forgotten the nuances of romance, let alone the significance of the day. It’s a playful reminder that love is multifaceted and can appear in many forms—not just the romantic kind.
Family Celebrations Take Centre Stage
As if to add to the unexpected joy of the day, my uncle, whose birthday falls on February 14th, has decided to celebrate this year. It’s delightful to see him so keen, especially considering he’s not yet 90 but is certainly in his golden years. I must admit, it would have been a poor choice to decline his birthday celebration in favour of waiting for his monumental 90th bash.
My uncle and I share a unique bond, punctuated by the enthusiastic greetings we exchange. “HELLO UNCLE RICHARD!” I bellow, and he responds with the same exuberance, “HELLO ZO!” This simple ritual began in 1978, rooted in the joy of our reunions. Now at 52, I relish the opportunity to shout my greeting even louder, a testament to our enduring connection.
The Pub: A Gathering of Kindred Spirits
We’ve decided to skip the overpriced restaurants that tend to capitalise on sentimental occasions. Instead, we’ll head to the pub, where the atmosphere is relaxed, and conversation flows freely. With the Williams clan and their associates in attendance, there will be no shortage of lively discussions. It’s a reminder that relationships do not solely exist in romantic partnerships; they are woven through family and friendships that bring us joy and support.
Interestingly, the “errant wives” I had to reschedule my plans with are now available the following day, turning this Valentine’s weekend into a delightful celebration of camaraderie rather than romantic love.
