In a move to adapt to the changing banking landscape, Santander has announced plans to close 18 of its UK branches this year, while also making significant changes to 52 of its existing locations. The impending closures come after the bank shuttered 95 branches in 2025, as more customers shift towards online and mobile banking services.

Santander conducted a comprehensive review of its branch network in 2021, which revealed that many of its customers are now opting to use digital banking channels more frequently. As a result, the bank has decided to implement a series of changes across its branch network, including reduced opening hours at 36 sites and the introduction of “counter-free” operations at 18 locations.

The reduced opening hours, which were rolled out from June 30, 2025, will see the affected branches open only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 9:30 am to 3 pm. Meanwhile, the “counter-free” changes, implemented in phases from June 16, 2025, are aimed at creating more space and time for branch teams to assist customers.

As for the branch closures, the process began on June 16, 2025, and is being carried out in phases. A total of 95 Santander branches closed in 2026, and a further 18 are set to close this year, with the exact dates yet to be confirmed.

In a statement, Santander said: “We’re closing some of our branches. This will happen in phases, starting from 16 June 2025. If you prefer to bank with us in person, there will still be ways to do this after these branches close.” The bank also announced the introduction of “Community Bankers” who will visit local spaces, such as libraries and community halls, to assist customers with their banking needs.

Customers who have questions or require assistance are encouraged to call Santander’s dedicated helpline at 0330 678 2469, which is open Monday to Sunday, 8 am to 6 pm. They can also use this number to book branch appointments or register for online, mobile, and telephone banking services.
