Storm Chandra is wreaking havoc across the UK, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds that have prompted a red flood warning in Ottery St Mary, Devon. The Environment Agency has issued urgent alerts, indicating imminent danger to life due to deep and fast-flowing floodwaters. Emergency services are mobilising to assist those in affected areas as nearly 100 flood warnings and close to 200 alerts have been issued nationwide.

Urgent Warnings Across the Region

As Storm Chandra continued to unleash its fury on Tuesday morning, residents of Ottery St Mary were advised to take immediate precautions. The Environment Agency urged locals to evacuate pets, family members, and vehicles from vulnerable areas if it was safe to do so. Additionally, they recommended turning off utilities such as gas, electricity, and water to mitigate hazards.

The storm’s impact was felt throughout south-west England, with significant flooding reported in various counties. The situation is exacerbated by ongoing rainfall on already saturated ground, leading to widespread disruptions.

Travel Disruptions and Road Closures

The extreme weather conditions have created chaos for travellers. The M48 Severn Crossing, which connects England and Wales, has been closed due to the hazardous wind conditions. High-sided vehicles have also been barred from crossing the Humber Bridge in north-east England.

In addition to these closures, numerous roads in Dorset, Somerset, and eastern Devon are impassable due to flooding, with Gwent police reporting significant water accumulation on the A40 between Abergavenny and Raglan in south-east Wales. National Highways has warned drivers that the A66 is shut between County Durham and Cumbria due to snow, advising motorists traversing the Pennines to plan alternative routes.

Rail services are also feeling the effects, with operators advising passengers to verify their travel arrangements before setting out, especially in south-west England where poor weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the day.

Weather Warnings and Forecast

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for rain across parts of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Somerset, predicting rainfall totals between 30 to 50mm, with higher elevations potentially receiving 60 to 80mm. Additionally, a second amber warning for wind has been put in place for Northern Ireland, where severe gales could lead to fallen trees and treacherous coastal conditions, with gusts reaching up to 75mph.

Unusually, winds are coming from a southeasterly direction, impacting areas usually shielded from such conditions. Snowfall is anticipated on higher ground in northern regions, potentially leading to blizzard-like conditions.

Ongoing Recovery from Recent Storms

The aftermath of previous storms, including Goretti and Ingrid, is still being felt in parts of south-west England. Earlier this month, winds reached 99mph (160km/h) on the Isles of Scilly, leaving thousands in Cornwall without power, water, and internet access. The storms also resulted in widespread tree damage, further complicating recovery efforts.

Why it Matters

The severe weather brought by Storm Chandra highlights the increasing volatility of the climate and its direct impact on communities. As flooding threatens lives and disrupts daily activities, the importance of preparedness and timely response from emergency services becomes paramount. The challenges faced by residents and travellers serve as a reminder of the need for robust infrastructure and effective communication systems to safeguard public safety in the face of extreme weather events.
