Shooting Incident in Manchester’s Gay Village Leads to Six Arrests

In a concerning turn of events, armed police responded to reports of a firearm discharge in the heart of Manchester’s Gay Village early this morning. Six men, aged between 23 and 26, have been arrested on suspicion of firearm offences and affray.

The incident occurred on Richmond Street, adjacent to the popular Canal Street, around 5 am on Saturday, 24th January 2026. Upon arrival, officers found a man with a leg injury consistent with a gunshot wound. A firearm was also recovered at the scene.

According to a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police, the injured man has been taken to the hospital, and his injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing. The six suspects remain in police custody for questioning as the investigation continues.

Superintendent Stephen Wiggins has sought to reassure the community, stating that the police believe this was a targeted incident and there is no wider threat to the general public. He acknowledged the concerning nature of the event, not just for those living and working in the city centre but for the entire Greater Manchester area.

“Once the call came in, our officers acted quickly, making to the scene to established what had unfolded at the address on Richmond Street, detaining six individuals who we believe have been involved in this incident,” Wiggins said.

This latest incident highlights the ongoing efforts by Greater Manchester Police to tackle gun crime in the region. Since 2023, the force’s Serious Crime Division has taken 168 firearms off the streets, underscoring their commitment to public safety.

The police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist their investigation to come forward.
