As Donald Trump’s administration systematically dismantles crucial environmental protections, a troubling silence has emerged among influential figures, including billionaires, Democratic leaders, and climate activists. This acquiescence to a pro-fossil fuel agenda marks a pivotal moment in the fight against climate change, raising urgent questions about the future of environmental advocacy and the political will to confront the escalating climate crisis.

A Concerning Retreat from Climate Advocacy

Since taking office in January 2025, Trump’s administration has aggressively targeted environmental regulations, earning praise from those who deny climate science. Marc Morano, a long-time sceptic of climate change, expressed his astonishment at the lack of pushback from traditionally vocal advocates during a recent forum in Zurich, Switzerland. “Billionaires are silent. Democrats in Congress have been silent. Climate activists. There has been no pushback on this,” Morano lamented, a sentiment echoed by several experts in the field.

Robert Brulle, an environmental sociologist at Brown University, highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that the Trump administration has effectively undermined the United States’ primary climate research institution, the National Center for Atmospheric Research. “The Trump administration just marched in and destroyed the crown jewel of climate science in the United States,” he stated, emphasising the lack of public outcry that followed such drastic measures.

Key Reversals in Environmental Policy

One of the administration’s most significant actions has been the repeal of the 2009 “endangerment finding,” which determined that greenhouse gas emissions pose a threat to public health. This finding was crucial for the federal government’s capacity to regulate emissions from vehicles and power plants. The elimination of this policy aligns perfectly with the long-standing objectives of the climate denial movement, further enabling Trump’s regulatory rollback.

Moreover, Trump’s appointee to the Department of Energy, Chris Wright, has curtailed the department’s renewable energy initiatives, effectively banning the use of terms like “climate change,” “green,” and “sustainability.” This aggressive pivot away from clean energy initiatives has been described by critics as a swift annihilation of President Biden’s climate agenda.

The Democratic Party, too, seems to have taken a step back. Instead of advocating for robust climate action, many representatives are now debating whether to focus on economic affordability rather than climate urgency. This shift is occurring even as public polling indicates that 63% of Americans believe their leaders should prioritise clean energy solutions.

The Silence of the Giants

The silence is not confined to politicians. Prominent tech figures, such as Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, have also altered their rhetoric surrounding climate commitments. Once champions of ambitious climate goals, their recent pivot towards fossil fuel-dependent AI infrastructures has left many advocates disheartened. Gates, in particular, has faced backlash for suggesting that climate change is not an imminent threat and for promoting a shift in funding priorities away from climate initiatives towards humanitarian aid.

The media landscape has mirrored this trend of silence. Journalists have reportedly become less confrontational in their coverage of Trump’s climate policies. “When you have Lee Zeldin, the EPA chief, calling climate a cult, a scam, religion, he doesn’t even get pushback from reporters,” Morano noted, highlighting a significant shift in how climate issues are reported compared to previous administrations.

A Global Phenomenon

The “climate hush” extends beyond the United States. At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, discussions on climate change were notably muted. Anjali Chaudhry, a business sustainability researcher, suggested that leaders now perceive climate discussions as politically charged, prompting them to sidestep the issue entirely. Even Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, once a vocal advocate for climate action, limited his references to climate change to mere mentions of international commitments.

Despite this pervasive silence, a significant majority of the global population—89%—supports climate action. This disconnect between public sentiment and political discourse has exacerbated a “spiral of silence,” where individuals underestimate the global support for climate initiatives, perpetuating a cycle of inaction.

Why it Matters

The current landscape of climate advocacy is alarming. The lack of resistance to the Trump administration’s anti-environmental policies not only emboldens climate deniers but also threatens the very fabric of climate action globally. As influential figures retreat into silence, the urgency to rekindle a vigorous and united front against climate change has never been more pressing. The fight for our planet’s future demands that we break this silence, rallying voices and actions towards meaningful change before it is too late.
