When the Mariners called in the seventh round, his joy was overwhelming. “It was one of the most rewarding feelings I’ve ever had,” he shared. “When I got off the phone, it felt like so much weight had been lifted off my shoulders. You never want to let your parents, family, and friends down.”
Since his trade to the Blue Jays in 2022, Macko has showcased his skills in spring training, impressing coaches and fans alike. He is expected to kick off the 2026 season pitching for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. If he progresses to the major leagues, Macko will join a select group of Slovak players in the sport’s history.
A Unique Background
Born in Bratislava, Macko was introduced to baseball at a young age, playing shortstop despite being a left-handed thrower. His transition to pitching came after struggles at the plate, and he faced a setback with a heel injury that kept him sidelined for six months. “Once I got back, you couldn’t tear me away,” he said, reflecting on his passion for the game.
His family relocated to Ireland when he was 12, and it was there that Macko first learned about Major League Baseball. “It was a dream of mine to be drafted as soon as I learned that it was possible,” he recalled. At 14, the family moved to Stony Plain, Alberta, fulfilling his parents’ aspiration of starting anew in Canada.
Training in Vauxhall
Macko honed his craft at a prestigious baseball academy in Vauxhall, Alberta, where he embraced a rigorous training regimen. Living in a dormitory, he balanced classes with extensive practice sessions, dedicating four to five hours daily to improve his pitching skills. This commitment paid off as he caught the attention of scouts and ultimately joined the Mariners’ organisation.
Upon being traded to the Blue Jays, Macko expressed his excitement. “When the Mariners called me and told me I had been traded, I asked to whom. When they told me it was the Blue Jays, I said, ‘Sweet!’ Seattle and Toronto were my two favourite teams,” he said, reflecting on his childhood fandom.
Team Canada’s Ambition
Macko and his teammates are currently competing in the World Baseball Classic, where they kicked off the tournament with an 8-2 victory over Colombia. With upcoming matches against Panama, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, Canada’s goal is to advance beyond the knockout stages for the first time in the tournament’s history. “It’s amazing here,” Macko expressed, highlighting the camaraderie among the players. “The group of guys are great and they welcomed me right in.”
