The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a significant slump in their season, experiencing a troubling eight-game winless streak since the NHL resumed play after the Milan Cortina Olympics. The latest disappointment came in the form of a 3-1 defeat against the Montreal Canadiens, leaving fans and analysts alike questioning the team’s performance as they struggle to regain their footing.

A Disheartening Run

Since the NHL returned to action, the Maple Leafs have managed just two points from eight outings, recording a dismal 0-6-2 record. The situation briefly seemed to improve with a hard-fought 4-3 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils on March 4, but the optimism was short-lived as the team quickly fell to the New York Rangers by a score of 6-2.

According to data from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, the betting public had a mixed view on these matches. In the game against New Jersey, 45 per cent of Proline players backed the Devils, while 39 per cent thought Toronto would hold within a 1.5-goal margin. The over at six goals attracted 57 per cent of the bets. However, the following game against the Rangers saw only 31 per cent of bettors predicting a New York victory, with 57 per cent still opting for the over.

The Maple Leafs’ woes continued against the Tampa Bay Lightning, who handed Toronto another defeat, this time a 5-2 loss. A staggering 77 per cent of bettors put their faith in the Lightning, with 73 per cent correctly betting on the over at 6.5 goals.

Raptors’ Mixed Fortunes

The difficulties didn’t end for Toronto sports fans, as the Toronto Raptors also struggled last week, finishing with a 1-2 record. Their only win came on Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks, where they triumphed 122-92. Previous losses to the New York Knicks (111-95 on March 3) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (115-107 on March 5) had dampened spirits.

Bettors largely favoured the Knicks in their encounter, with 69 per cent backing New York’s win and 77 per cent wagering on the Knicks to cover a spread of -2.5 points. The Timberwolves game saw 73 per cent of players backing Minnesota to win, although only 51 per cent felt confident enough to take them on the spread of -6.

In contrast, the Raptors enjoyed significant backing against Dallas, with 91 per cent of bettors predicting a win and 68 per cent feeling confident enough to back them at -10 on the spread.

World Baseball Classic Performance

Turning to international play, Canada has had a mixed bag of results at the World Baseball Classic. They began their campaign with an emphatic 8-2 victory over Colombia, a match where 84 per cent of bettors backed the Canadians at -1.5 runs. However, they subsequently faltered against Panama, succumbing to a narrow 4-3 defeat.

In this encounter, only 25 per cent of bettors had faith in Panama’s upset, while just 17 per cent believed the winners could keep the game within 4.5 runs. The betting landscape for both of Canada’s games reflects a mix of optimism and disappointment among fans.

Betting Highlights

Amid the struggles of local teams, there were notable betting highlights as well. One digital bettor turned a modest $2 wager into $1,146.15 through a six-leg NHL parlay, while a retail player enjoyed a massive payout of $6,050.40 after correctly predicting an eight-leg parlay with the same initial stake.

Why it Matters

The ongoing struggles of both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Raptors paint a concerning picture for sports fans in Canada’s largest city. With high expectations from both teams, their current form raises questions about their playoff aspirations and the overall health of their respective franchises. As the NHL and NBA seasons progress, fans will be watching closely to see if these teams can turn their fortunes around and reignite hope in a city that thrives on sporting success.
