In a harrowing case that has shocked the local community, Jon Ruben, a 76-year-old man from Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, has confessed to drugging his wife so that he could continue his sexual abuse of children at a summer camp. Ruben’s admissions were made during a hearing at Leicester Crown Court, where he faced multiple charges stemming from his actions at Stathern Lodge in July.

Disturbing Allegations Uncovered

Ruben has been charged with 17 criminal counts, including sexual assault against a child under 13 and various drug-related offences. His guilty plea came on 14 November, but further details emerged during a hearing on Wednesday. The court learned that between 26 and 29 July, Ruben administered the tranquilliser temazepam to his wife, Susan, to prevent her from waking during his abusive acts.

In a deeply affecting moment, Ruben, visibly distressed, told the court, “I’m so sorry,” as the judge indicated that the upcoming sentencing would likely evoke even stronger emotions.

Children Affected by Reckless Actions

The case first gained attention when eight children and one adult fell ill at the summer camp. Prosecutors detailed how Ruben had conducted a game involving sweets that he had laced with drugs, leading to severe health complications for the young participants. Reports indicated that several children experienced slurred speech, difficulty walking, and were unable to wake up the following morning after consuming the treats.

Mary Prior KC, the prosecuting barrister, laid out a chilling account of Ruben’s manipulative behaviour, which had persisted over his 27 years of running the holiday camp. The court was told that concerns were raised by Ruben’s stepson, who discovered suspicious items in Ruben’s belongings, including syringes and various lubricants. This prompted him to alert the authorities.

Extensive Evidence of Abuse

Upon further investigation, police uncovered a disturbing collection of indecent images on Ruben’s electronic devices. They found over 50 Category A videos, the most severe classification, along with additional Category B and C videos, all recorded between August 2022 and June 2023. Importantly, it was confirmed that none of the footage involved children from the summer camp.

Leicestershire Police have clarified that the owners and operators of Stathern Lodge had no connection to Ruben’s crimes, distancing themselves from the tragic events.

Upcoming Sentencing

Ruben has been remanded in custody at HMP Leicester as he awaits sentencing, scheduled for Friday. The presiding judge acknowledged the gravity of the situation, suggesting it would be an “emotional” day for all involved.

Why it Matters

This case highlights the critical importance of safeguarding children in environments where they should feel secure. It serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that can exist even in trusted spaces, making ongoing vigilance and robust protective measures essential. The community’s response to this incident will be pivotal in shaping future safety protocols for youth programmes, ensuring that such violations are addressed promptly and effectively.
