In an unprecedented development, the Wildlife Trusts have designated 2025 as “the Year of the Blooming Octopus,” following the remarkable rise in octopus populations along the south-west coast of England. Their annual marine review indicates that this summer witnessed the highest recorded numbers of octopuses since 1950, attributed largely to warmer sea temperatures linked to climate change.
## Record Catches and Sightings
The Wildlife Trusts report that UK fishermen captured over 1,200 tonnes of octopus during the summer of 2025, a staggering increase compared to previous years. Specifically, fishing data reveals that the south coast regions of Devon and Cornwall have seen the most prolific octopus populations since records began, with the number of landings surpassing 200 tonnes only once since 2021.
Most of the octopuses identified belong to the species *Octopus vulgaris*, typically associated with warmer Mediterranean waters. Volunteers from the Wildlife Trusts have documented sightings that exceed 1,500 percent compared to 2023, showcasing a thriving marine ecosystem. Matt Slater of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust remarked, “It really has been exceptional. We’ve observed octopuses jet-propelling, camouflaging as seaweed, and even walking away using two legs, displaying remarkable behaviour.”
## Uncertain Future for Cephalopod Populations
While the current surge in octopus numbers is remarkable, experts caution that it remains uncertain whether this bloom is a permanent phenomenon or a temporary fluctuation. The eight-armed cephalopods primarily feed on shellfish such as lobsters, crabs, and scallops, prompting concerns about the potential long-term effects on these species and the fishing industry. Ruth Williams, head of marine at the Wildlife Trusts, warned that the changing dynamics might necessitate adaptations in fishing practices. “They are having an impact on those (shellfish) species around our shores, and consequently, they will affect our fishing industry,” she stated. “However, there are opportunities, and our fishing industry is currently researching how to adapt to the evolving fisheries resulting from climate change.”
Official statistics indicate a decline in crab landings this year, while catches of lobster, crawfish, and scallops have remained stable, suggesting a complex interplay of ecological factors at work.
## Environmental Challenges and Conservation Successes
The Wildlife Trusts’ marine review also highlights significant environmental challenges faced over the past year. Notably, the year began with a catastrophic incident involving an oil tanker colliding with a container ship in the North Sea, resulting in a substantial spill of plastic resin pellets. Additionally, nearly 4.5 tonnes of bio-beads were released from a water treatment facility in Sussex in November, posing further threats to marine life.
On a more positive note, the review reported a record number of puffins on Skomer Island in Pembrokeshire, with 46,000 individuals counted this year. Conservation efforts by Ulster Wildlife Trust to eradicate invasive brown rats have proven successful, leading to a resurgence of puffins on the Isle of Muck, marking their return for the first time in at least 25 years.
