In a worrying trend, Ventura County, California, has reported its sixth rattlesnake bite in less than a month, raising alarms among local residents and health officials. This alarming uptick comes alongside two fatalities attributed to snake bites in Southern California this year, attributed to an unusually warm spring that has driven these reptiles out of hibernation earlier than expected.

A Growing Concern

On Sunday, a man was bitten by a rattlesnake near California State University Channel Islands. Emergency responders quickly transported him to a local hospital, where he received antivenom and was reported to be in stable condition. This incident marks a significant spike in rattlesnake encounters; in 2025, the entire county recorded only nine bites throughout the year.

Andrew Dowd, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Fire Department, noted the concerning trend. “We have seen a warmer spring than in past years,” he explained. “This year’s heavy rains have also contributed to an increase in the small rodent population, which in turn attracts rattlesnakes.”

Fatalities Highlight Serious Risks

Tragically, the risks posed by rattlesnakes have resulted in two fatalities this year. On March 14, a 46-year-old woman lost her life after being bitten while hiking in Wildwood Regional Park. Just weeks earlier, on March 4, 25-year-old Julian Hernandez died following a bite while biking near the Quail Hill Trailhead in Orange County.

Such fatalities are rare but underscore the potential dangers associated with rattlesnake encounters, particularly during this time of year when outdoor activities peak.

Statewide Increase in Rattlesnake Bites

The situation is not limited to Ventura County. The California Poison Control System has reported a notable increase in rattlesnake bite-related calls, with 77 incidents recorded in the first three months of 2026 alone. This figure contrasts sharply with the typical annual average of 200 to 300 calls, predominantly occurring from April to October.

Dr. Jeffrey Suchard, an emergency physician and medical toxicologist at UCI Health, reassured the public, stating that “death by rattlesnake bite is extremely rare.” Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention documents between 7,000 and 8,000 snake bites annually, with only about five resulting in fatalities. However, the current situation highlights the need for vigilance and awareness.

Essential Safety Tips for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Given the current environment, local officials are urging hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to adopt stringent safety measures. Dowd recommends staying on well-marked trails, avoiding tall grass and brush, and wearing appropriate footwear such as hiking boots and long pants. Additionally, carrying a fully charged mobile phone is crucial for emergencies.

In the event of a snake bite, Dowd emphasises the importance of remaining calm and limiting movement to slow the spread of venom. Immediate medical attention should be obtained by calling 911 as soon as possible.

Why it Matters

As the weather warms and outdoor activities increase, the rise in rattlesnake bites serves as a stark reminder of the natural hazards present in California’s wilderness. By understanding the risks and following safety precautions, individuals can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors while minimising their chances of encountering these potentially dangerous reptiles. Awareness and preparedness are key to ensuring a safe experience in nature, ultimately fostering a healthier relationship between humans and the wildlife that shares their environment.
