In an alarming turn of events, Ventura County in Southern California has reported its sixth rattlesnake bite in less than a month, echoing a concerning trend as the warmer weather draws both the reptiles and outdoor enthusiasts to popular trails. With two fatalities already recorded this year, local officials are urging the public to exercise caution while enjoying nature.

A Rising Concern

Paramedics responded to a call on Sunday regarding a man who suffered a rattlesnake bite near California State University Channel Islands. The victim was promptly transported to a hospital where he received antivenom and was reported to be in stable condition. This incident marks a significant increase in rattlesnake bites, with the county having documented nine such cases throughout the entire year of 2025.

The situation has become dire, as two fatalities from rattlesnake bites have been reported in Southern California this year alone. A tragic incident on 14 March claimed the life of a 46-year-old woman while she was hiking in Wildwood Regional Park. Just days earlier, on 4 March, 25-year-old Julian Hernandez succumbed to his injuries after being bitten while biking near the Quail Hill Trailhead in Orange County.

Weather Patterns and Snake Activity

Andrew Dowd, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Fire Department, attributes the increased incidence of rattlesnake encounters to an unusually warm spring season, coupled with heavy rains that have altered the local ecosystem. “We are experiencing a warmer spring than in previous years, and after significant rainfall this winter, snakes are becoming more active as they emerge from their dens,” Dowd explained.

Indeed, March saw unseasonably high temperatures, with some days reaching between 80°F and 90°F, likely prompting these reptiles to venture out earlier than usual. The recent wet weather has also increased the population of small rodents, which are a primary food source for rattlesnakes, further contributing to their activity.

Statewide, the California Poison Control System has observed a notable rise in rattlesnake bite inquiries. In the first three months of 2026 alone, there were 77 calls related to these incidents, which is a significant uptick compared to the annual average of 200 to 300 calls. Notably, rattlesnakes are the only venomous snakes native to California, with bite incidents typically peaking from April to October.

Expert Insights on Safety

Despite the heightened risk, experts remind the public that fatalities from rattlesnake bites remain exceedingly rare. Dr. Jeffrey Suchard, an emergency physician and medical toxicologist at UCI Health, highlighted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention records between 7,000 and 8,000 snake bites annually in the United States, with only about five resulting in death.

To mitigate risks, Dowd emphasised the importance of adhering to basic safety precautions while outdoors. He advises hikers to stay on designated trails, avoid tall grass and dense brush, wear appropriate footwear and long pants, and always carry a fully charged mobile phone. In the unfortunate event of a snake bite, he stressed the importance of remaining calm and limiting movement to slow the spread of venom while calling for emergency assistance.

Why it Matters

The rise in rattlesnake bites in Southern California serves as a crucial reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and wildlife. As more individuals venture into natural spaces, understanding and respecting the habitats of these reptiles becomes essential. By prioritising safety and awareness, the public can continue to enjoy the great outdoors while minimising the risk of dangerous encounters.
