In a remarkable personal story, a London-based eye surgeon has shared his experience of undergoing emergency surgery for a detached retina, a condition he has treated countless times in his career. Dr. Amir Hamid, 51, a chief medical officer for the Optegra eye hospital group, found himself in the patient’s chair last year when a blind spot appeared in his right eye.

Despite his extensive medical knowledge, Hamid was initially alarmed by the situation. “At the end of July, I noticed that there was a blank patch in the field of vision in my right eye and immediately realised that it could be the start of a detached retina,” he recounted. Wasting no time, Hamid promptly went to the hospital, where he was scheduled for surgery within just three hours.

As an experienced eye surgeon, Hamid acknowledged that the experience could have been “very stressful and frightening,” but his trust in the medical professionals involved made the process less daunting. “I had the treatment done in time to preserve all my sight, and after a couple of weeks’ recovery, I could go back to work,” he said, expressing his gratitude for the swift action taken.

Retinal detachment occurs when the thin layer at the back of the eye becomes loose, leading to symptoms such as floaters, flashes of light, and changes in vision. Hamid emphasised the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if these symptoms arise, as delaying treatment can result in permanent vision loss.

In addition to his own experience, Hamid has also dealt with a cataract that developed as a side effect of his surgery. However, he was able to have the cataract treated privately before it affected his vision, highlighting the availability of NHS surgery for more advanced cataracts in England.

Reflecting on his journey, Hamid is now urging the public, especially the older population, to be vigilant about any unusual eye symptoms and to seek professional help without delay. “You certainly shouldn’t ignore the symptoms of retinal detachment, because it can lead to loss of vision, and if it’s left too late, it may be difficult to recover that vision,” he cautioned.

Hamid’s personal experience and professional expertise have given him a unique perspective on the importance of proactive eye care. By sharing his story, he hopes to empower others to take their eye health seriously and seek timely treatment, ensuring that they can maintain their vision and enjoy a better quality of life.
