In a concerning development, a 21-year-old man has been arrested in Bristol on suspicion of attempting to join the proscribed terrorist organisation Daesh. The arrest was part of a pre-planned police operation in the Horfield area, carried out by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE), Counter Terrorism Policing South West (CTPSW), and Avon and Somerset Police.
During the property search following the arrest, a “suspicious item” was discovered, prompting the authorities to evacuate a “small number” of nearby residents as a safety precaution. The area has been cordoned off as the object is being examined.
Chief Inspector Keith Smith of Avon and Somerset Police has sought to reassure the local community, stating that the arrest and subsequent events were part of a pre-planned operation. He acknowledged the concern this may cause but emphasised that the public’s safety is the top priority.
A representative from CTPSE has confirmed the details of the arrest, stating that the 21-year-old man from Bristol was apprehended on suspicion of attempting to join the banned organisation Daesh, in violation of Section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
The increased police presence in the Horfield area is expected to continue as the investigation progresses. Residents have been urged to come forward with any information that may be relevant to the case.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism and the vigilance required to maintain public safety. As the authorities work to address this matter, the community is encouraged to remain calm and cooperate with the police during this sensitive time.
