As the death toll from the ongoing protests in Iran continues to rise, with reports of over 5,000 casualties, US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to the Islamic Republic. In a statement made on his return from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump revealed that a “massive” US military “armada” is heading towards the Middle East, hinting at the possibility of a retaliatory strike.

The protests in Iran, which began late last month, have been met with a brutal crackdown by the government, leading to a significant loss of life. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), a US-based group, the death toll has reached 5,002, comprising 4,716 protesters, 203 government-affiliated individuals, 43 children, and 40 civilians not participating in the demonstrations. Additionally, the group reports that at least 26,541 people have been arrested.

In response to the escalating situation, the US military has moved more assets towards the Middle East, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its associated warships, which were previously stationed in the South China Sea.

Trump’s comments come as a direct threat to Iran, warning that any action taken against the US would result in a military response that would “make the 12-day war look like peanuts.” The president has also claimed to have prevented the execution of 800 people detained during the protests, a claim that has been strongly denied by Iran’s top prosecutor, Mohammad Movahedi.

The Iranian government has responded with a defiant stance, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi promising a “powerful response” if the country comes under attack. Araghchi’s comments, made in an opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal, suggest that Iran is prepared to retaliate with full force if provoked.

The situation remains tense, with the country under the most comprehensive internet blackout in its history, making it difficult to verify the full extent of the unrest. As the world watches closely, the potential for a military confrontation between the US and Iran looms large, raising concerns about the stability of the region and the potential for further escalation.
