A Toronto family is on a mission to transform their personal tragedy into a beacon of hope for others in need of organ transplants. Tim and Elizabeth Tutsch, parents of nine-year-old Isabella, are spearheading a fundraising initiative that has already amassed an impressive $2 million to support the organ transplant programme at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

A Life-Changing Journey

Isabella’s ordeal began at the tender age of three when a routine elective surgery to remove a cyst from her liver turned disastrous. Following complications, including sepsis and an unintended lobectomy, her health took a severe downturn, leaving her in dire need of a liver transplant. Unfortunately, neither Tim nor Elizabeth could donate due to blood type incompatibility. “We were at a standstill,” recalled Elizabeth from their home in Toronto. “Then a friend unexpectedly stepped up to save her life.”

This selfless friend, a mother of three, turned out to be a perfect match for Isabella, leading to a successful transplant on October 21, 2021, at SickKids. Isabella has since thrived, although she will require lifelong medication. Remarkably, the donor’s liver, from which 40 per cent was taken, has also completely regenerated.

Turning Adversity into Advocacy

Rather than dwelling on the misfortunes that beset their daughter’s initial operation, the Tutschs chose to channel their experiences into philanthropy. “We faced a decision: to be angry and pursue legal action or to strive for positive change,” explained Tim, who works as an investment banker at the Bank of Montreal. “We ultimately decided to make a difference.”

In honour of Isabella’s transplant anniversary, the family established Team Izzy and launched an annual gala named The Secret Garden. The event, held each year around October 21, has quickly become a cornerstone of their fundraising efforts. Over the past three years, they have successfully raised $2 million, setting their sights on a lofty goal of $5 million in the future.

Raising Awareness for Live Donations

In addition to funding vital transplant procedures, the Tutschs are committed to educating the public about live organ donation. “Most people are unaware that you can donate 40 per cent of your liver, and it can regenerate completely, saving a life in the process,” Tim noted. Elizabeth added that while initiating the fundraiser was daunting, the potential impact on others made it worthwhile. “Seeing how we could help others made it far more significant than just our own situation,” she reflected.

Why it Matters

The Tutsch family’s journey underscores the critical importance of organ donation awareness and the profound impact it can have on the lives of children in need. Their remarkable efforts not only provide financial support for life-saving procedures but also inspire a community to recognise the power of altruism. By sharing their story, the Tutschs hope to motivate others to consider live donations, ultimately saving more lives and fostering a culture of compassion and generosity.
