At least 17 individuals, predominantly schoolgirls, lost their lives in a devastating drone strike on Wednesday in the village of Shukeiri, located in Sudan’s White Nile province. The attack, attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), also left at least 10 others injured, marking a grim escalation in a conflict that has ravaged the nation for nearly three years.

Details of the Attack

The strike targeted a secondary school and a nearby healthcare centre, resulting in a significant loss of life and injury. Dr Musa al-Majeri, director of Douiem Hospital, the closest major medical facility, reported that three of the injured girls sustained severe wounds, with two undergoing surgical procedures and a third being transported to Khartoum for further treatment.

The Sudan Doctors Network, which monitors the ongoing conflict, was among the first to confirm the strike, indicating that the fatalities included two educators and a healthcare worker. Alarmingly, the network noted the absence of any military presence in the vicinity at the time of the attack, reinforcing claims that civilians were deliberately targeted.

Ongoing Conflict and Atrocities

Dr Razan Al-Mahdi, spokesperson for the medical group, condemned the incident as part of a broader pattern of violence perpetrated by the RSF in the region. She highlighted that this was not an isolated event, as the paramilitary forces had recently assaulted various civilian establishments, including a student dormitory and a power station.

Since the outbreak of hostilities in April 2023, sparked by a power struggle between Sudan’s military and the RSF, the country has descended into chaos. The conflict has claimed over 40,000 lives, according to United Nations estimates, though humanitarian organisations suggest the actual toll could be significantly higher. The Kordofan region has seen particularly intense violence, with drone strikes becoming a frequent method of attack, resulting in daily casualties.

A Pattern of Violence

The conflict has been marked by harrowing human rights violations, including mass killings, sexual violence, and other crimes that are now under investigation by the International Criminal Court as potential war crimes and crimes against humanity. The situation has reached alarming levels, especially following the RSF’s latest offensive in October, when they seized the city of el-Fasher in Darfur. Experts commissioned by the UN described the assault as exhibiting “hallmarks of genocide,” with reports indicating that at least 6,000 people were killed within a mere three-day period.

Why it Matters

The drone strike in Shukeiri underscores the tragic reality of civilian life amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The targeting of educational institutions and healthcare facilities reveals a disturbing trend towards the deliberate assault on non-combatants, raising urgent questions about accountability and the protection of human rights in war-torn regions. As the international community grapples with the implications of this violence, the need for immediate humanitarian intervention and a concerted effort to restore peace in Sudan has never been more critical.
