A devastating incident at a popular bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana has claimed the life of an 18-year-old Swiss national, bringing the total fatalities from the New Year’s Eve fire to 41. The young victim succumbed to injuries at a Zurich hospital on January 31, following the tragic event that unfolded on January 1, 2026.

Details of the Incident

The fire erupted during a festive celebration at Le Constellation bar, where revelers reportedly ignited sparklers attached to champagne bottles, inadvertently igniting sound insulation foam on the ceiling. The aftermath has been catastrophic, with casualties predominantly comprising young individuals; the deceased ranged in age from 14 to 39 years.

In a statement, Beatrice Pilloud, the public prosecutor for the Wallis canton, confirmed the latest casualty and noted that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire is ongoing. “The death toll from the fire at Le Constellation bar has now risen to 41,” Pilloud stated, emphasising that further details would be withheld for the time being.

Affected Individuals

Among the deceased, 23 were Swiss citizens, including a dual national of France and Switzerland. The tragedy also claimed the lives of 18 foreign nationals, including eight from France, six from Italy, and others from Belgium, Portugal, Romania, and Turkey. The majority of the injured, totaling 115 people, are still receiving treatment in hospitals across Switzerland and beyond.

The health ministry of Wallis reported that as of Monday, 37 patients remain in Swiss hospitals, while 44 others are being treated in various countries, including France, Italy, Germany, and Belgium.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are delving into the factors that precipitated this disaster. Four individuals are currently under criminal investigation, which includes the bar’s co-owners, the head of public safety for Crans-Montana municipality, and a former fire safety officer. This inquiry aims to determine liability and ensure accountability in the wake of this tragedy.

Patients who suffered severe injuries were swiftly airlifted to specialised burns units across Switzerland and other European nations, showcasing the urgent response from emergency services. The dynamic nature of the situation has seen patients transitioning between different hospitals for various stages of care, with some remaining in intensive care.

Why it Matters

The Crans-Montana bar fire underscores the urgent need for stringent safety regulations in venues that host large gatherings, particularly during celebratory events. As communities mourn the loss of young lives, this tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the potential consequences of negligence in public safety. The ongoing investigation aims not only to provide answers to the victims’ families but also to prevent similar occurrences in the future, reinforcing the importance of rigorous safety standards in protecting the lives of patrons in public spaces.
