In a devastating incident that underscores the ongoing turmoil in Sudan, at least 17 individuals, predominantly schoolgirls, lost their lives when a drone strike targeted a secondary school and a healthcare facility in the village of Shukeiri, located in the White Nile province. The attack, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has left the nation grappling with the aftermath of escalating violence amidst a prolonged civil conflict.

The Attack and Its Victims

On Wednesday, the explosive-laden drone targeted the educational and medical hub in Shukeiri, resulting in a tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. Dr Musa al-Majeri, director of Douiem hospital, reported that at least 10 people were wounded, with three girls suffering severe injuries. Two of these girls required surgical intervention, while the third was urgently transported to the capital, Khartoum, for further treatment.

Reports from the Sudan Doctors Network, which tracks war-related violence, confirmed the fatalities included two teachers and a healthcare worker. Alarmingly, both the medical group and Dr al-Majeri emphasised that there was no military presence in the vicinity at the time of the attack, further intensifying the tragedy of this incident.

Ongoing Conflict and Rising Casualties

The drone strike in Shukeiri is merely the latest in a series of violent episodes that have plagued Sudan during its nearly three-year conflict. The hostilities erupted in April 2023, following a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, spiralling into widespread chaos across the nation. According to UN estimates, the conflict has claimed over 40,000 lives, although humanitarian organisations warn that the actual death toll may be significantly higher.

The violence has predominantly concentrated in the Kordofan region, with reports of daily drone assaults and other acts of brutality. The conflict has been marred by horrific acts, including mass killings and sexual violence, drawing the attention of the International Criminal Court as possible war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Atrocities and International Response

The most recent wave of atrocities took place in October 2023, when RSF forces and their Janjaweed allies seized control of the city of el-Fasher in Darfur. UN-commissioned experts characterised this offensive as bearing “hallmarks of genocide,” with at least 6,000 individuals reported killed within a span of three days. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, as the humanitarian crisis deepens and the potential for further violence remains alarmingly high.

Dr Razan Al-Mahdi, a spokesperson for the medical group, condemned the recent drone strike as a continuation of the RSF’s pattern of violations in the White Nile region. She highlighted that the paramilitary forces have attacked multiple civilian facilities in recent days, including a student dormitory and a power station, which raises serious concerns about the safety of non-combatants in the area.

Why it Matters

This tragic incident is emblematic of the broader humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Sudan, where civilians continue to bear the brunt of a conflict driven by power struggles and systemic violence. As the death toll rises and the fabric of society frays, the international community faces an urgent call to act. The plight of innocent civilians, particularly children, must be addressed to prevent further loss of life and to pave the way for a sustainable resolution to this enduring crisis. The world must not turn a blind eye to the suffering of those caught in the crossfire of a war that shows no signs of abating.
