In a heartbreaking incident, Paul John Lumber, a 61-year-old painter and decorator from Bristol, passed away after suffering fatal head injuries in an accidental fall from a ladder. The tragedy occurred as Mr. Lumber was attempting to tie a Union Jack flag to a lamppost near his home on the evening of 22nd November 2025.

According to the inquest held at Avon Coroner’s Court, neighbours heard a loud bang before discovering Mr. Lumber on the ground, with his ladder nearby. He was immediately rushed to Southmead Hospital, where he underwent surgery, but his condition continued to deteriorate, and he sadly succumbed to his injuries on 6th December.

The assistant coroner, Dr. Simon Fox KC, concluded that Mr. Lumber’s death was an accidental outcome, stating that he “fell from a ladder while tying a Union Jack flag to a lamppost at night after consuming alcohol.”

A statement from coroner’s officer Andrew Eastwood revealed that Mr. Lumber, a well-known fan of Bristol City FC, had attended a football match and consumed several alcoholic drinks before returning home and deciding to put up flags in the neighbourhood. Tragically, his attempt to display his team’s colours resulted in the fatal accident.

Dr. Richard Moon, from the neurosurgery department at Southmead Hospital, confirmed that Mr. Lumber suffered extensive head injuries, including a skull fracture, and despite the two operations performed, he ultimately succumbed to the traumatic brain injury sustained in the fall.

The inquest heard that Mr. Lumber’s wife, Michelle, had no concerns regarding the care and treatment provided to her husband. In a touching tribute, a close friend described him as a devoted supporter of both Bristol City and the England national team, whose “world revolved around those he loved.”

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the importance of safety precautions, particularly when working at heights, even for seemingly simple tasks. The loss of Mr. Lumber, a beloved member of the Bristol community, has left his family and friends in mourning, and serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life.
