In a devastating turn of events, Marcus Fakana, a 19-year-old who had recently been freed from a Dubai jail, has been killed in a car crash while fleeing from police. The incident occurred just three months after Fakana’s release from prison, where he had been serving time for a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
Marwaan Mohamed Hussein, the 20-year-old driver of the vehicle, has admitted to causing Fakana’s death through dangerous driving. Hussein was also unlicensed and uninsured at the time of the crash, which took place in the early hours of October 3rd last year in Tottenham, north London.
The crash happened as Metropolitan Police officers were attempting to stop the vehicle of interest driven by Hussein. After a brief pursuit, the officers temporarily lost sight of the car, only to find it had been involved in a collision with a lorry.
Fakana was rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries. Another passenger in the vehicle was also seriously injured in the crash.
Hussein, who is currently in custody at HMP Pentonville, has pleaded guilty to causing Fakana’s death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving to the other passenger. He is scheduled to be sentenced on February 27th.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock, especially considering Fakana’s recent release from a Dubai prison. Radha Sterling, the chief executive of the campaign group Detained in Dubai, expressed her heartbreak over the news, stating, “It’s sad that of all of 2025, he was only free for the three months from the 3rd of July until the 3rd of October.”
Fakana’s case had gained attention after he was imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl while on holiday with his parents in the summer of 2024. The teenager spent around a year in prison before being freed through a royal pardon from Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
