In a devastating incident on Wednesday, at least 17 individuals, predominantly schoolgirls, lost their lives when a drone strike targeted a secondary school and a healthcare facility in the village of Shukeiri, located in Sudan’s White Nile province. The attack, attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has drawn widespread condemnation and highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

Details of the Attack

Dr. Musa al-Majeri, the director of Douiem Hospital, reported that the strike resulted in not only fatalities but also left at least 10 individuals injured, with three girls sustaining severe wounds. Two of these girls underwent surgery at the facility, while the third was urgently transported to the capital, Khartoum, for further treatment.

The Sudan Doctors Network, an organisation dedicated to monitoring the conflict’s toll on civilians, was among the first to report the incident. Their investigation confirmed that those killed included two teachers and a healthcare worker, emphasising the absence of any military presence in the area at the time of the attack. Both Dr. al-Majeri and the Sudan Doctors Network have placed the responsibility for this tragedy squarely on the shoulders of the RSF, which has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.

A Pattern of Violence

Dr. Razan Al-Mahdi, a spokesperson for the medical group, condemned the strike as a continuation of the RSF’s “horrific crimes” against civilians in the White Nile region. In the days leading up to this attack, the RSF had reportedly targeted various civilian facilities, including a student dormitory and a power station, raising alarm over the escalating violence in the area.

This drone strike is the latest in a series of deadly assaults that have characterised Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which erupted in April 2023 due to a power struggle between the military and the RSF. The situation has spiralled into a humanitarian disaster, with UN estimates indicating that over 40,000 individuals have perished due to the fighting, though aid organisations suggest the true death toll could be significantly higher.

The Broader Context of the Conflict

The conflict has predominantly centred around the Kordofan region, where daily assaults, many involving drones, have become commonplace. The war has been marred by atrocities, including mass killings and rampant sexual violence, prompting investigations by the International Criminal Court into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In October, the RSF and its Janjaweed allies executed a brutal assault on the city of el-Fasher in Darfur, which UN experts characterised as bearing “hallmarks of genocide.” Reports indicate that at least 6,000 people were killed in just three days during this assault, underscoring the dire implications of the ongoing violence.

Why it Matters

The tragic events in Shukeiri serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of Sudan’s protracted conflict, particularly the vulnerability of civilians, especially women and children, amidst the chaos. As violence continues to escalate and international attention wanes, the plight of those affected by the conflict remains critical. This latest incident not only highlights the urgent need for intervention and accountability but also reinforces the call for a renewed focus on humanitarian aid and protection for the most vulnerable in the region. The world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Sudanese people as they endure the devastating consequences of a war that has already claimed far too many lives.
