In a heartbreaking incident, an elderly couple, Marlene Mumford, 84, and William Mumford, 90, were found dead in their Nelson home following a devastating explosion and fire. The tragedy unfolded on 12 December 2025 in the Heol Fawr area of the Caerphilly county, leaving the local community in shock.
According to the inquest heard at Gwent Coroner’s Court on Monday, emergency services struggled to gain access to the Mumfords’ home due to the extent of the fire, structural issues, and safety concerns. A provisional post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death for both individuals was “exposure to combustion products of fire”.
Senior coroner Caroline Saunders stated that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident. The inquest has been adjourned while the investigation continues, with full hearings scheduled to take place in October.
