A recent trespassing case at Western University has escalated into a significant investigation involving the discovery of materials potentially intended for bomb-making. The incident, which began on January 24, has prompted police operations extending to both Ottawa and Gatineau, illustrating the far-reaching implications of this unsettling situation.

Initial Incident Sparks Alarm

Around 1:40 a.m. on January 24, officers from the London Police Service were summoned to aid the Western University Special Constable Service concerning a trespasser. Responding to the call, police apprehended a man following a foot chase on campus grounds. Upon arrest, officers discovered a loaded handgun, raising immediate concerns about the security of the university environment.

As the investigation unfolded, authorities identified a second individual implicated in the trespassing episode. This led them to a residence near Chesham Avenue and Chesham Place, where they uncovered hazardous chemicals that could potentially be utilised for explosive purposes. This alarming find resulted in the apprehension of two more suspects linked to the property.

Ongoing Investigation and Police Action

In response to the threat, explosive disposal technicians secured the premises, which has since remained under police surveillance. The investigation has continued to evolve, prompting law enforcement to execute search warrants in both Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec, in search of further evidence and connections.

“This complex investigation has spanned multiple cities and provinces,” stated the police in a release dated January 30. They expressed gratitude for the collaboration with law enforcement partners, highlighting the extensive nature of the operation. As of now, police continue to maintain a presence at the scene, removing equipment while partner agencies conclude their involvement.

Charges Filed Against Suspects

Authorities have charged a 27-year-old man from Ottawa and a 26-year-old man from London with several offences, including firearm-related charges, resisting arrest, breaking and entering with intent, and occupying a vehicle with a firearm. Additionally, a 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, both from London, face charges of unlawful possession of explosives.

In a statement to Global News, Western University confirmed its commitment to safety, stating, “We are working closely with the London Police Service on this investigation. Our top priority is the safety of our campus community, and we have assurance from LPS that the buildings involved in the weekend incident are secure and safe.”

The university’s proactive approach underscores the importance of maintaining a secure educational environment amidst such serious allegations.
