A design featuring Donald Trump is set to grace a new 24-karat gold coin, approved by a federal arts commission as part of the United States’ upcoming 250th birthday celebrations on July 4, 2026. Despite existing federal regulations prohibiting the depiction of living presidents on currency, the US Mint has been given the green light to produce this commemorative piece, highlighting the intersection of politics and national heritage.
Approval by the US Commission of Fine Arts
On Thursday, the US Commission of Fine Arts voted unanimously to endorse the design, which reflects the political leanings of its members, all appointed by Trump earlier this year. The decision allows the US Mint to start production on the coin, although specifics regarding its size and denomination remain unresolved. Brandon Beach, the US treasurer, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins than that of our serving president, Donald J Trump.”
Navigating Federal Law
While federal law prohibits living presidents from appearing on US currency, Megan Sullivan, the acting chief of design management at the Mint, clarified that the treasury secretary holds the power to authorise the minting of specific coins. Sullivan confirmed that the design had received Trump’s approval prior to the meeting, a detail that aligns with the commission’s supportive stance towards the current administration.

The design features a stern-faced Trump in a suit and tie, leaning forward with his fists resting on a desk-like surface. The upper portion of the coin is inscribed with the word “Liberty” along with the years “1776” and “2026,” while the phrase “In God We Trust” is displayed at the bottom, flanked by stars.
Design Details and Production Plans
The reverse side of the coin showcases a bald eagle in flight, accompanied by the phrases “United States of America” and “E Pluribus Unum.” Chamberlain Harris, a commissioner and White House aide, remarked on the significance of the design, asserting, “I know it’s a very strong and a very tough image of him, and I think it’s fitting to have a current sitting president who’s presiding over the country over the 250th year on a commemorative coin for said year.”
The minting process will involve a “very limited production run,” although the exact number of coins to be produced is still to be determined. Some commissioners have suggested that the coin should be of substantial size, reflecting Trump’s known preference for grandeur. James McCrery II, another commissioner, noted that “the president likes big things,” referencing his previous work on a significant expansion of the White House.
Why it Matters
This commemorative coin not only serves as a celebration of the United States’ milestone anniversary but also reflects the current political climate, intertwining national identity with the persona of a sitting president. As the nation gears up for this historic occasion, the coin may become a potent symbol of both patriotism and partisanship, encapsulating the complexities of American democracy in a single, striking piece of currency.
