While some manufacturers have successfully transitioned to PFAS-free alternatives, the switch often proves costly and logistically complex. Debbie Reed, head of CSR at Equip Outdoor Technologies, highlighted the difficulties involved in ensuring that all components of their products meet new standards. “It’s a challenging process,” she stated, noting that achieving compliance requires a thorough overhaul of their production lines.
However, the water industry has called for even more decisive action, suggesting that the government should consider a complete ban on PFAS. A representative from Water UK remarked, “The problem with PFAS will only escalate unless chemical companies are held accountable for their manufacture and the environmental damage caused.”
Conversely, the Chemical Industries Association has cautioned that while they are committed to finding alternatives, the process is not instantaneous. “Identifying suitable replacements that are both environmentally friendly and effective can be a lengthy and complex challenge,” their spokesperson noted.
