Sofia Demkiv, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, has marked a significant milestone by graduating with distinction from Keele University, a poignant achievement following her family’s harrowing escape from Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict. Demkiv’s family fled Kyiv in April 2022, shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February. Leaving behind their home, they arrived in the UK as part of the government’s Homes for Ukraine initiative, settling in Stoke-on-Trent. The transition was anything but easy, as the family faced uncertainty about their future and the fate of their homeland.
Reflecting on her experiences, Demkiv expressed immense pride in her academic accomplishments, stating, “Knowing the journey my family and I have been through, and how much heart and soul I put into my studies at Keele under such difficult circumstances, makes this moment feel incredibly special.”

Demkiv pursued a master’s degree in marketing at Keele University, and her graduation on Wednesday was a testament to her determination. She described this achievement as the first time in her life she felt “truly proud” of her academic efforts. “It was an incredibly scary and stressful time,” she recounted, recalling the moment her family decided to leave Ukraine amidst the sounds of nearby explosions.
Her academic journey was not just about personal growth; it also symbolised hope for a brighter future. “I love the UK and I’m incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received,” she shared, highlighting the kindness shown to her family upon their arrival.

Looking ahead, Demkiv plans to gain work experience in the financial technology sector, aiming to establish a career that can support her dreams. Despite the challenges she has faced, her resolve to return to Ukraine in the future remains strong. “I hope to move back to Ukraine eventually to raise a family,” she stated, expressing both gratitude for her new life in the UK and a longing for her homeland.
Demkiv’s recent visit to Kyiv in October provided her with a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by her compatriots. She described the atmosphere as “impossible to describe unless you experience it yourself,” noting a sense of normalcy among the residents, who have sadly adapted to the frequency of attacks.
