Urgent Call for Action as Migratory Fish Populations Plummet

A recent report from the United Nations has revealed alarming declines in migratory fish populations, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures. Over the past fifty years, global numbers of these vital species have decreased by an estimated 81%, primarily due to habitat destruction, pollution, and overfishing. Among the fish identified for immediate conservation are the golden mahseer and the goonch catfish, both of which play significant roles in their ecosystems and local economies.

The State of Migratory Fish

Migratory fish are critical to the health of aquatic ecosystems and the livelihoods of millions. Dr. Zeb Hogan, a co-author of the report and a biology professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, emphasised their importance, stating, “Freshwater fish support hundreds of millions of people around the world, so for humans, they’re very important.” He pointed out that many of these species, including the giant piraíba catfish, exhibit remarkable migratory patterns spanning thousands of miles.

The UN’s report is a follow-up to a 2011 assessment, significantly expanding its scope by evaluating over 15,000 species — a substantial increase from the 3,000 species previously considered. This comprehensive analysis has led to the identification of 325 fish needing inclusion in global conservation agreements, with 30 species designated as top priorities. Among these, several are found in the UK, including the Allis shad and the Atlantic salmon.

Habitat Loss and Overfishing

The decline of migratory fish can be attributed to two major threats: habitat loss and overfishing. Michele Thieme from the World Wildlife Fund, who also contributed to the report, noted that iconic species such as the golden mahseer are not only economically valuable but culturally significant, particularly in the Himalayas where they are revered for their spiritual importance.

Habitat destruction often stems from the construction of dams, which disrupt natural water flows and fragment river systems. Such barriers prevent fish from accessing their spawning grounds, leading to significant population declines. Dr. Janina Gray, head of science at WildFish, pointed out that in Europe, barriers to fish migration are encountered on average every kilometre. These obstacles can have a devastating cumulative effect, forcing fish to expend vital energy overcoming them, increasing their susceptibility to disease and predation.

Need for Coordinated Conservation Efforts

The report underscores the necessity for international collaboration to address the challenges faced by these migratory species. Many of them traverse national boundaries, making it imperative for governments to unite in their conservation efforts. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species, a UN treaty established in 1979, serves as a framework for cooperation, and the UN now aims to have the 30 identified fish species added to this treaty during its next annual meeting in three years.

Historically, conservation efforts have focused on more prominent species such as big cats and whales. However, as highlighted by Amy Fraenkel, the Executive Secretary for the Convention on Migratory Species, it is now time for migratory freshwater fish to receive the attention they deserve.
