Urgent Call to Protect Global Migratory Fish Populations Amid Alarming Decline

In a striking new report, researchers have revealed that migratory fish populations around the world are facing a catastrophic decline, with numbers plummeting by an estimated 81% over the past fifty years. This drastic reduction is largely attributed to habitat degradation, pollution, and overfishing, which collectively hinder these fish from reaching their vital breeding grounds. As a response, the United Nations has prioritised thirty flagship species, including the golden mahseer and goonch catfish, for urgent conservation efforts.

A Troubling Trend

The findings of this comprehensive study, involving over 15,000 species of freshwater migratory fish—accounting for half of all fish species—underscore a growing environmental crisis. Dr. Zeb Hogan, a leading researcher and professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, emphasised the significance of these fish to global communities. “Freshwater fish support hundreds of millions of people around the world,” he stated. “They not only provide food for approximately 200 million people but also embody an incredible diversity of life that is crucial to protect.”

The report marks a significant expansion from the UN’s previous assessment conducted in 2011, where only 3,000 species were evaluated. This time, a more extensive dataset facilitated a thorough analysis, identifying 325 species that require immediate monitoring and support. Among these, 30 have been flagged as particularly vulnerable, with several species, such as the Allis shad and Atlantic salmon, native to the UK.

The Dual Threat: Overfishing and Habitat Loss

The golden mahseer, revered in the Himalayas and often referred to as the “tiger of the river,” exemplifies a species facing profound challenges. Michele Thieme, deputy lead for freshwater at the World Wildlife Fund US, noted that cultural and spiritual significance accompanies the economic value of such species. “Many people in that region value the golden mahseer for practices that transcend mere economic interests,” she explained. Unfortunately, both overfishing and habitat loss are rapidly eroding their populations.

Dr. Thieme highlighted that habitat loss often stems from dam constructions that fragment river systems and disrupt the natural flow, making it increasingly difficult for fish to access their spawning habitats. This disruption is particularly acute in Europe, where fish encounter barriers every kilometre on average, limiting their migratory routes.

Barriers to Migration

The cumulative effect of these barriers is staggering. Dr. Janina Gray, head of science at the environmental charity WildFish, pointed out that even small obstructions like culverts and redundant weirs can significantly impact migratory fish. “These barriers force fish to expend more energy to navigate around them, increasing their susceptibility to diseases and making them more likely to spawn in less than optimal conditions,” she warned.

The need for coordinated international efforts is paramount, as many migratory species traverse multiple countries during their journeys. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species, a UN treaty established in 1979, aims to facilitate such collaboration, and the UN is now advocating for the inclusion of the identified fish species in the treaty’s framework at its next meeting in three years.

A Beacon of Hope

Historically, some species have successfully rebounded following concerted conservation initiatives. The saiga antelope, for instance, faced dire population collapse in 2015, but thanks to international anti-poaching efforts, their numbers have surged past one million. Amy Fraenkel, the UN Executive Secretary for the Convention on Migratory Species, asserted that it is now time for migratory freshwater fish to receive the same level of attention and support that has been previously afforded to more prominent species.

“The focus has predominantly been on larger, more visible species like big cats and whales,” Fraenkel said. “Now, it’s crucial to shift our focus towards the often-overlooked migratory freshwater fish, which play a vital role in our ecosystems.”
