Director Coerte Voorhees expressed his deep admiration for Kilmer, stating, “He was the actor I wanted to play this role. The project is being developed in close collaboration with Kilmer’s estate and his daughter, Mercedes. Voorhees noted that Kilmer’s son, Jack, has also been involved, supporting the film’s vision. “His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this,” he shared. “Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”

*As Deep As the Grave* is based on the real-life endeavours of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris, who collaborated with the Navajo people in the 1920s to uncover the ancient Ancestral Puebloan civilization. The film, initially titled *Canyon Del Muerto*, has been in development since 2023 and features a talented cast including Tom Felton as Earl and BAFTA winner Abigail Lawrie as Ann.
