In a shocking display of disrespect, former US President Donald Trump has come under fire for disparaging the efforts of British troops in Afghanistan. Speaking to Fox News on Thursday, Trump claimed that NATO forces “stayed a little back, a little off the front line,” suggesting they were unwilling to support American military efforts.

Trump’s comments have sparked outrage among veterans and their families, who have pointed to the 457 British deaths in the Afghan conflict. Critics have also highlighted the former president’s own avoidance of military service during the Vietnam War.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson condemned Trump’s remarks, stating, “The president was wrong to diminish the role of NATO troops, including British forces.” They emphasised that NATO troops made significant sacrifices “in the service of collective security and in response to an attack on our ally.”

The UK was among several allies that joined the US in Afghanistan after NATO’s collective security clause was invoked for the first time in its history following the 9/11 attacks. Trump’s dismissive attitude towards the contributions of America’s closest allies has drawn widespread condemnation.

Veteran groups and military families have expressed their disappointment and anger at Trump’s disrespectful comments. Many have called for the former president to issue a formal apology for his disparaging remarks about the British Armed Forces.

This latest controversy adds to the growing list of concerns surrounding Trump’s relationship with America’s traditional allies and his apparent disregard for the sacrifices made by international forces in support of shared security interests.
