As the winter season continues to grip the nation, weather forecasts indicate that a significant snowstorm is set to sweep across large parts of England next week. According to the latest predictions, a 388-mile “wall of snow” is expected to hit the country on Tuesday, January 27th, with the South West of England and sections of Wales bearing the brunt of the wintry conditions.
The Met Office has issued alerts about the approaching colder weather, with their extended outlook for the period from January 25th to February 3rd suggesting that weather systems moving in from the Atlantic will continue to push into the UK. However, these systems are likely to stall as they encounter high pressure to the north and northeast.
As a result, further spells of rain or showers are anticipated, particularly in the south and west, with the best of any drier interludes expected in the far north and northeast. While mild conditions are expected to encroach into the south and southwest at times, it is likely to turn somewhat colder during this period, bringing the risk of some snow showers, most likely across hills in Scotland and northern England.
The weather maps from WX Charts indicate that the snow band is forecast to hit the South West of England and sections of Wales at 6am on Tuesday, before moving in an easterly direction. Nearly every English county is expected to experience snowfall that day, with the West Midlands expected to be under the snow blanket by midday, with flurries continuing until 6am on Wednesday, January 28th – a total of 18 hours.
Interestingly, two southern counties, Cornwall and Hampshire, are predicted to escape the heavy snowfall, according to the forecasts. This follows the Met Office’s warning about the potential for “heavy and persistent” showers, especially in the south and west, with the best of any drier periods in the far north and northeast.
As the UK braces for the wintry onslaught, residents are advised to keep a close eye on the weather updates and be prepared for the potential disruption that the heavy snowfall may bring. With the Met Office urging 23 areas to “make emergency kits” in anticipation of the incoming Storm Ingrid, it’s clear that the nation is in for a challenging few days ahead.
