Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has levelled allegations against European allies, accusing them of attempting to coerce Kyiv into reopening the Druzhba pipeline, which transports Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia. Zelensky asserts that resuming oil flows through Ukraine would equate to lifting economic sanctions imposed on Moscow, a stance that he firmly opposes.

A Pipeline in Disrepair

The Druzhba pipeline, a relic from the Soviet era, has been out of commission since January due to damage inflicted by Russian air strikes. Despite repair efforts, the pipeline remains non-operational. Hungary, heavily reliant on Russian energy, is leveraging this situation to block new EU sanctions against Russia, as well as a critical €90 billion (£78 billion) loan intended for Ukraine, until the pipeline is restored.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been vocal in his opposition to Ukraine, making it a key aspect of his campaign as he faces re-election in April. With his party trailing in opinion polls, the stakes are high, and Orban’s government appears to be using the pipeline issue as a bargaining chip.

European Pressure on Ukraine

The EU has been urging Zelensky to expedite repairs on the Druzhba pipeline, suggesting that he permit inspectors to assess the damage. Concerns have been raised among EU officials that Zelensky’s reluctance could inadvertently bolster Orban’s re-election bid. In a recent press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky articulated his principled opposition to allowing Russian oil to transit through Ukraine while the EU maintains sanctions on its sale elsewhere.

European Pressure on Ukraine

“Why is it acceptable to tell the United States that we oppose lifting sanctions, yet we are being pressured to resume oil transit through Druzhba at a political price that effectively supports anti-European policies?” Zelensky remarked, highlighting the perceived hypocrisy in the EU’s demands.

The Broader Context of Sanctions

Zelensky’s comments come in the wake of a US decision to relax sanctions that previously restricted other nations from purchasing Russian oil, a move aimed at alleviating an energy supply crunch exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This decision has sparked criticism from various European leaders, further complicating the geopolitical landscape.

“I want them to know that I am against restoring Russian oil supplies,” Zelensky stated. He emphasised that he is not obstructing negotiations but rather standing firm on his position against the flow of Russian oil through Ukraine. He described the EU’s conditions for military aid as tantamount to blackmail.

Ukraine’s Defence Collaboration with the US

In light of the escalating conflict in the Middle East, Zelensky also discussed Ukraine’s capabilities in drone technology, equating their interceptor drones to “Ukrainian oil.” He expressed readiness to engage in a $50 billion joint production deal with the United States, indicating a growing partnership in military technology.

Ukraine's Defence Collaboration with the US

Zelensky noted that since the US-Israel operations against Iran began, there has been increased interest from Washington in collaborating with Ukraine on defence matters. He stated, “Our military is in contact at various levels,” highlighting the urgency and necessity of such partnerships in the face of global threats.

Despite these developments, Zelensky voiced concerns regarding the potential diversion of US military attention towards the Middle East, warning that this could delay critical weapon deliveries to Ukraine. He reiterated his opposition to the US’s temporary sanctions waiver for Russian oil already at sea, arguing that relaxing sanctions would only serve to strengthen Russia’s position.

Why it Matters

Zelensky’s allegations against EU allies underscore a critical juncture in international relations, particularly concerning energy security and military assistance amidst ongoing conflicts. The unfolding situation not only affects Ukraine’s immediate geopolitical strategy but also has far-reaching implications for the stability of the European energy market and the global response to Russian aggression. As tensions rise, the stakes for both Kyiv and its allies grow ever higher, with the potential for significant shifts in both military and economic alliances.
