Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a powerful message to British lawmakers today, declaring that Iran and Russia are “brothers in hatred” as he urged vigilance against the threats posed by drone warfare. Speaking in a packed Westminster committee room, Zelensky highlighted the dangerous collaboration between Tehran and Moscow, particularly the sale of Iranian Shahed drones to Russia for use in its ongoing assault on Ukraine.

A Call for Unity

Addressing over 60 MPs and peers, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Zelensky warned that easing sanctions on Russian oil could have dire consequences. He stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on Moscow amid rising oil prices, which are fuelling Russia’s military operations. This comes as the U.S. has temporarily relaxed some sanctions to tackle soaring fuel costs linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Zelensky drew parallels between the crises in Ukraine and the Middle East, arguing that both regions are grappling with the same forces. He positioned Ukraine as a leader in modern warfare, equipped with the knowledge and technology to combat both Russian aggression and Iranian drone threats.

Sharing Expertise

The Ukrainian president revealed that 201 military experts from Ukraine are currently in the Middle East, with an additional 44 ready to deploy, offering their expertise on countering Iranian drones. He underscored Ukraine’s willingness to form partnerships with allies, stating, “We are ready to offer similar deals to all our reliable partners.”

Sharing Expertise

Utilising technology to bolster defence strategies, Zelensky showcased real-time mapping of Russian strikes during his address. He emphasized the effectiveness of simple tools, like an iPad, in coordinating Ukraine’s military response. As a gesture of gratitude, he presented a similar device to King Charles III during a prior meeting at Buckingham Palace, symbolising deepening cooperation between Ukraine and the UK.

Strengthening Defence Ties

During the meeting with Zelensky, Prime Minister Starmer reiterated the necessity of keeping the focus on Ukraine, asserting that “Putin can’t benefit from a conflict in Iran, whether that’s oil prices or the dropping of sanctions.” The two leaders announced a new defence partnership aimed at tackling the proliferation of cheap attack drones, which would leverage Ukrainian expertise alongside the UK’s industrial capabilities.

As part of this collaboration, Britain will provide £500,000 to establish an AI centre of excellence in Kyiv. This initiative seeks to enhance Ukraine’s technological capabilities in the face of ongoing threats, as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran stretches into its third week.

Why it Matters

Zelensky’s stark warnings highlight the interconnectedness of global conflicts and the urgency of international solidarity against aggression. As rising oil prices may inadvertently bolster Russia’s war efforts, the need for a unified front against both Moscow and Tehran becomes increasingly critical. Ukraine’s perseverance is not only a fight for its own sovereignty but a battle that could define the future of European security and stability.
