Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a stark warning to European nations about the escalating risk of drone attacks from non-state actors, emphasising that the capacity for mass strikes is no longer limited to state actors like Vladimir Putin. During a visit to Downing Street on Tuesday, where he met with UK opposition leader Keir Starmer, Zelenskyy highlighted the urgent need for preparedness against a new wave of threats stemming from advanced drone technology.
A New Era of Threats
Zelenskyy’s remarks came as he demonstrated cutting-edge drone technology to British lawmakers, underscoring the shifting landscape of warfare. “It’s not just a wealthy madman like Putin who can orchestrate mass attacks,” he cautioned, pointing to the proliferation of drone capabilities among terrorist groups, criminal networks, and even individuals. He stressed that the current geopolitical climate demands a proactive approach from European nations to counter these emerging threats.
The Ukrainian leader specifically called out the alliance between Russia and Iran, describing them as “brothers in hatred.” He noted that Russia has been utilising Iranian-designed Shahed drones to devastate critical infrastructure in Ukraine, reinforcing the idea that the threat is not confined to traditional military confrontations.

Starmer echoed Zelenskyy’s concerns, urging Western allies to maintain their focus on Ukraine as the conflict in Iran risks revitalising Russia’s economy through increased oil revenues. “Putin cannot be allowed to benefit from the turmoil in Iran,” he asserted, highlighting the importance of unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of these challenges.
