The much-anticipated sequel to the 2016 hit Zootopia, titled Zootopia 2, has shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The film, which was released in November, has amassed a staggering $1.7 billion (£1.3 billion) in global box office earnings, surpassing the previous record holder, Inside Out 2, which made $1.69 billion in 2024.

Zootopia 2 is now the ninth highest-grossing film in global box office history, outperforming blockbusters such as Avatar, Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film, which sees the return of rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and her con artist fox partner Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), follows the duo as they pursue a mysterious new reptilian resident, Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan).

Despite this remarkable achievement, Zootopia 2 is not the highest-grossing animated film globally. That title still belongs to China’s Ne Zha 2, which made $2.2 billion (£1.65 billion) last year. Nevertheless, Zootopia 2’s success is a testament to the enduring popularity of the Zootopia franchise and the continued appeal of animated films in the global market.

“This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible,” said Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, in a statement. “We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers … Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.”

Zootopia 2’s record-breaking performance is all the more impressive given the challenges faced by the film industry in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s impressive box office numbers suggest that audiences are eager to return to the cinema and experience the magic of animated storytelling on the big screen.

As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, Zootopia 2’s success serves as a reminder of the enduring power of well-crafted, engaging narratives that can captivate audiences worldwide. With its blend of humor, adventure, and social commentary, the film has resonated with viewers, cementing its place as one of the most successful animated films in Hollywood history.
