An 82-year-old man has died after a dispute over a beach lounger turned violent on Vouliagmeni beach, close to Athens, on Sunday, in an incident local media said drew in several people and ended with a 76-year-old man reportedly arrested.
Altercation on Vouliagmeni beach
The confrontation began over the use of sunloungers on the busy stretch of coast south of the Greek capital. Witnesses described a rapidly worsening argument that became physical before others became involved, turning a seemingly ordinary summer disagreement into a fatal incident.
One person who saw the disturbance told Kathimerini that the shouting was so intense it could be heard from the far side of the beach. Another witness said the 82-year-old appeared to have been waiting for companions and had set aside a lounger, which seemed to spark the original dispute.
During the scuffle, the older man collapsed. Reports said cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered and a defibrillator was used before an ambulance reached the scene. He was then taken to hospital, where he later died.

A 76-year-old man has reportedly been arrested in connection with the clash. A 21-year-old woman who was with him was also detained, but was later released.
Witnesses speaking to the daily Ta Nea said the woman had visible injuries, describing her face as swollen and bleeding. The accounts point to a chaotic scene, though the precise sequence of blows, interventions and injuries remains part of the official inquiry.
