In a heartbreaking loss for the British television community, Derek Martin, the iconic actor who portrayed the beloved character of Charlie Slater on the long-running BBC soap opera ‘EastEnders’, has passed away at the age of 92.

Martin, a Bow-born actor, first joined the cast of ‘EastEnders’ in 2000, quickly becoming a fan favourite as the caring and devoted father and taxi driver. He would go on to play the role of Charlie Slater until 2011, with occasional guest appearances until his final departure in 2016.

In a touching statement, Martin’s family expressed their profound grief, saying: “Derek wasn’t just a dad to us. He was a friend and supported us through our highs and lows. He never stopped learning, he loved meeting people and was always generous with his time. We miss him terribly.” They have requested that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.

Prior to his breakout role on ‘EastEnders’, Martin had a diverse acting career, appearing in numerous television programmes, including ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Z-Cars’, ‘The Professionals’, ‘The Sweeney’, ‘Eldorado’, and the BBC’s ‘Law and Order’ series. He also had a role in the ITV prison drama ‘The Governor’, written by renowned screenwriter Lynda La Plante.

La Plante herself paid tribute to Martin, describing him as an “extremely talented actor, genuine and truthful from the moment he first came on TV”, and expressing her “sincere condolences to his family.”

Martin’s agent, Sharon Henry, echoed these sentiments, stating that he “was a truly authentic working-class voice in British television and film” and that he “was a devoted father, a generous member of the charitable Water Rats, avid golfer and all-around good man who will be greatly missed.”

An ‘EastEnders’ spokesperson also expressed the show’s deep sorrow, saying, “From the moment he arrived, Derek’s portrayal of Charlie Slater instantly cemented him in the hearts of the audience, as the head of one of EastEnders’ most iconic families. Charlie would do anything for his family, and much like his character, Derek would do the same for those around him. Derek was deeply loved by all those that worked with him at EastEnders and will always be remembered with great fondness. Our love and thoughts are with his family and friends.”

The loss of Derek Martin is a profound one for the British television industry, as he leaves behind a legacy as a talented and beloved actor who touched the lives of countless viewers through his portrayal of the iconic Charlie Slater. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on through the indelible mark he has left on the hearts of all who knew and admired him.
