In a harrowing incident that underscores the devastating impact of Sudan’s ongoing conflict, at least 17 individuals, predominantly schoolgirls, were killed on Wednesday when a drone strike targeted a secondary school and a healthcare centre in the village of Shukeiri, located in White Nile province. The attack, attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has reignited concerns over the escalating violence in the region.

A Day of Horror in Shukeiri

The strike occurred midday, taking the lives of innocent students, educators, and a healthcare worker, with reports indicating that at least 10 others sustained injuries. Dr Musa al-Majeri, the director of Douiem Hospital, the nearest significant medical facility, confirmed that three of the injured girls were in critical condition. Two of them required surgical intervention, while the third was transported to Khartoum for urgent care.

The Sudan Doctors Network, a group monitoring the humanitarian crisis, was among the first to report the tragedy. They highlighted the absence of military presence in the village, further condemning the attack as a blatant assault on civilians. Dr Razan Al-Mahdi, a spokesperson for the network, characterised the incident as part of a broader pattern of violations perpetrated by the RSF, which has been implicated in numerous attacks on civilian infrastructure in recent days.

The Context of Ongoing Conflict

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal conflict following a power struggle between the military and the RSF. This turmoil has resulted in catastrophic humanitarian conditions, with the United Nations estimating fatalities exceeding 40,000. However, humanitarian organisations caution that the actual death toll may be significantly higher, given the chaos and lack of accurate reporting from conflict zones.

The violence has predominantly centred on the Kordofan region, where drone strikes and other aerial bombardments have become alarmingly routine. The situation is further compounded by reports of atrocities that include mass killings and sexual violence, prompting investigations by the International Criminal Court into potential war crimes.

A Pattern of Atrocities

The assault in Shukeiri is merely the latest in a series of attacks that have ravaged the country. In October, the RSF and its allied Janjaweed militias launched a catastrophic offensive in el-Fasher, a city in Darfur, resulting in an estimated 6,000 deaths over just three days. United Nations experts have described these actions as bearing the “hallmarks of genocide.”

In the wake of these events, the international community is faced with an urgent need to address the escalating humanitarian crisis. The RSF’s unchecked violence against civilians raises pressing questions regarding accountability and the protection of human rights in conflict zones.

Why it Matters

The relentless violence in Sudan is not simply a national tragedy; it poses a significant threat to regional stability and evokes a moral imperative for global intervention. As the death toll continues to rise and the humanitarian situation deteriorates, the international community must prioritise immediate and effective responses to protect civilians and hold accountable those responsible for these atrocities. The events in Shukeiri serve as a grim reminder of the conflict’s toll on innocent lives and the urgent need for a comprehensive resolution to restore peace and security in Sudan.
