As pet owners, we often assume that “natural” products are safe for our furry companions. However, a recent warning from dog trainers and veterinarians suggests that certain common household items, particularly essential oils and diffusers, can pose serious risks to dogs and other pets.

Holly, an assistant trainer at the Willliam Atherton Canine Centre in Derbyshire, took to TikTok to raise awareness about the dangers of essential oils and diffusers. “Let’s talk about something most owners don’t even realise can harm their dog. Essential oils and diffusers,” she said.

While these products may make our homes smell pleasant, the concentrated vapours they release can be highly irritating to pets’ sensitive airways. “Because dogs have far more sensitive airways and a much stronger sense of smell than we do, that concentrated vapour can irritate their lungs, trigger coughing, or in some cases, cause chemical burns inside the respiratory tract,” Holly explained.

Certain essential oils, including tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, cinnamon, pine, citrus, and ylang-ylang, have been identified as particularly hazardous to dogs. Even small amounts absorbed through the skin or repeatedly inhaled can lead to a range of distressing symptoms, such as drooling, tremors, lethargy, and in the worst cases, liver toxicity.

Dr Suzanne Moyes, an in-house vet at Burgess Pet Care, echoed these concerns, warning that not just dogs and cats, but all pets, including rabbits and guinea pigs, are at risk from common household items like candles, diffusers, and air fresheners.

To ensure the safety of our pets, experts recommend taking a cautious approach when using scented products and essential oils in the home. Opt for low-risk ingredients, use them in well-ventilated spaces, and keep them well out of reach of curious paws. Additionally, it’s advisable to avoid using these products when pets are present and allow surfaces to dry completely before allowing any contact.

As pet owners, it’s crucial that we educate ourselves on the potential hazards in our homes and take the necessary precautions to protect our beloved companions. By being vigilant and making informed choices, we can create a safe and healthy environment for our furry friends.
