An inquest in Devon has revealed the circumstances surrounding Janet Fordham’s untimely death, which occurred after she travelled to Ghana in search of financial restitution from scammers.
A Journey Fueled by Desperation
The inquest, held in Exeter, detailed how Fordham, a 69-year-old retired housekeeper, fell victim to numerous romance scams orchestrated by fraudsters operating from various locations, including the UK, Germany, the US, and Ghana. Over five years, she lost an estimated £800,000 to £1 million, which not only drained her savings but also led to the sale of her home and land. Fordham’s family had actively sought to intervene, but as a legally competent adult, she was free to make her own choices.
Her daughter-in-law, Melanie Fordham, recounted how Janet began her online dating journey in 2017, where she became involved with a man posing as a British army sergeant major stationed in Syria. This individual claimed to need her assistance in transporting gold bars to the UK. Despite Melanie’s warnings about the implausibility of the situation, Janet sent approximately £150,000 to him.
The Illusion of Recovery
Following her initial scams, Fordham fell prey to another fraudster who posed as a diplomat. Melanie noted that while Janet eventually recognised she had been scammed, she struggled with the reality of her situation, leading to a series of financial transfers made through various channels, including bank and wire transfers.
In a twist of fate, Fordham was contacted by a man in Ghana named Kofi, who claimed he could help her regain her lost funds. Believing him to be a doctor who had come across her details while working in a phone shop, Janet flew to Accra in October 2022. The relationship between the two appeared to develop into a romantic one, culminating in Janet agreeing to marry Kofi.
