In a heartbreaking case that highlights the devastating impact of online fraud, a British woman tragically lost her life while attempting to recover her life savings, which had been swindled from her over the course of five years. An inquest in Devon has revealed the circumstances surrounding Janet Fordham’s untimely death, which occurred after she travelled to Ghana in search of financial restitution from scammers.

A Journey Fueled by Desperation

The inquest, held in Exeter, detailed how Fordham, a 69-year-old retired housekeeper, fell victim to numerous romance scams orchestrated by fraudsters operating from various locations, including the UK, Germany, the US, and Ghana. Melanie noted that while Janet eventually recognised she had been scammed, she struggled with the reality of her situation, leading to a series of financial transfers made through various channels, including bank and wire transfers.

In a twist of fate, Fordham was contacted by a man in Ghana named Kofi, who claimed he could help her regain her lost funds. Believing him to be a doctor who had come across her details while working in a phone shop, Janet flew to Accra in October 2022. The relationship between the two appeared to develop into a romantic one, culminating in Janet agreeing to marry Kofi.

A Fatal Turn of Events

On Valentine’s Day in 2023, while en route to meet Kofi’s family to discuss their impending marriage, the vehicle they were travelling in swerved off the road and overturned. Janet Fordham, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained life-threatening injuries and was
