Rob Sleeth, coach of the Saskatoon Racing Canoe Club, expressed concern over the impact of the rising water levels on training schedules. “We usually host dragon boating for schools, which we’ve had to cancel. For our athletes who typically train twice daily, we will need to seek alternative locations, possibly at a pond in Stonebridge or Pike Lake,” he said. The volume of water being released is attributed to an unprecedented snowpack in Alberta, where some regions have recorded over three metres of snow. The rapid melting, compounded by a deluge of more than 100 millimetres of rain last week, is now making its way downstream.

Pomeroy cautioned that the river will flow far more rapidly than what residents may be accustomed to, leading to potential dangers along the banks, which may erode under the increased pressure. “I strongly advise against swimming in the river at this time. Canoeists and kayakers must exercise extreme caution, especially near the weir,” he added.
