In a shocking revelation, the Zoological Wildlife Foundation (ZWF) in Miami has been embroiled in controversy following a federal inspection that uncovered serious animal welfare violations. The inspection, conducted by wildlife authorities in March, revealed troubling conditions at the facility, owned by Mario Tabraue, a former drug kingpin featured in the infamous Netflix documentary *Tiger King*. Among the most alarming findings was the amputation of an endangered clouded leopard’s leg and the death of a capybara, both attributed to mishandled breeding practices.

Disturbing Findings from the Inspection

Federal wildlife inspectors conducted a thorough evaluation of ZWF in late March and reported a series of critical violations that highlighted the dire state of animal care at the facility. The inspection revealed unsafe and dilapidated housing conditions, contaminated food and water supplies, and filthy cages. These findings have prompted animal rights advocates to renew calls for the zoo’s closure, asserting that profit is prioritised over the welfare of the animals.

Klayton Rutherford, the director of captive wildlife advocacy at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), expressed outrage over the situation, stating, “The facility chases profits at the expense of animal welfare, and animals are paying with their lives and limbs at this hideous roadside zoo.” This statement underscores the ongoing concerns surrounding ZWF, particularly following the tragic incidents involving Petra, the clouded leopard, and the deceased capybara.

The inspection revealed that Petra suffered a severe injury when a male clouded leopard attacked her paw. The USDA’s veterinary medical officer, Danisha Bullock, reported that the two leopards were housed in separate enclosures with a shared wall, leading to the unfortunate incident.
