In a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday morning, an under-construction high-rise near Grand Central Terminal in Midtown Manhattan was evacuated due to alarming structural issues that raised fears of a potential collapse. The 37-storey building, located at 235 East 42nd Street, was undergoing renovations to transform it into a residential complex with over 1,600 apartments, a project set for completion in 2027. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
Emergency Response Activated
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) received reports just before 8 a.m. regarding bricks falling from the building. Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders identified significant structural problems, including buckling support beams on the 21st and 22nd floors. Multiple cracks and sagging floors between the 21st and 26th floors were also observed, prompting a swift evacuation of the building and surrounding structures.
Approximately 130 fire and emergency medical services personnel were dispatched, alongside 40 fire units, to manage the situation. In addition to the high-rise, nearby buildings—including a hotel and a school—were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The evacuation extended to multiple addresses on East 43rd Street and East 42nd Street, with parts of those streets closed to traffic.
Investigating Structural Integrity
As tensions rose, eyewitness accounts and video footage revealed construction workers witnessing the alarming buckling of internal columns. Cliff Johnson, a representative of the Steamfitters union, expressed grave concerns about the renovation process, suggesting insufficient steel reinforcements had been installed. “They obviously didn’t add the right amount of steel, so the north side is crumbling,” Johnson stated. “The I-beams are bending like cigarettes in there, which is super dangerous.”
The FDNY has deployed drones to conduct a thorough examination of the building, and the investigation is ongoing. The New York City Department of Buildings is also on-site to assess the structural integrity and address the reported issues.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the media, emphasising the city’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and workers in the vicinity. “Luckily, there have been no injuries to report at this time. All workers are accounted for. The building has been evacuated, and a number of tall buildings in the area are also being evacuated,” Mamdani noted during an unrelated press conference. The mayor further advised commuters to steer clear of the area and seek alternative routes while the situation remains under control.
