The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed on Tuesday that the remains found at a residential property on Kelly Jordan Road in Montague, a small township approximately 75 kilometres southwest of Ottawa, are those of Lawrence Bertrim. This revelation comes months after the remains of two other men were unearthed at the same location.
A Grim Discovery
Lawrence Bertrim, who was 42 years old when he was last seen in September 2022 in downtown Smiths Falls, has now been positively identified through the remains discovered on the property. Detective Inspector Jennifer Patton emphasised that the investigation remains in its early stages, and the cause of death for Mr. Bertrim has yet to be ascertained.
This marks the third set of human remains found at the property, raising serious concerns within the community. The initial discovery occurred last autumn when investigators executed a search warrant on October 30, leading to the identification of Robbie Thomson, a Smiths Falls resident who had been reported missing two years prior. Thomson, who was 34 when he disappeared, has had three individuals charged with his first-degree murder, while a fourth person faces charges as an accessory.
Previous Cases Linked
In August, the OPP announced the discovery of a second set of remains on the same property, later identified as Robert Lambert. Mr. Lambert had been missing since November 2018 and was 75 years old at the time of his disappearance. Originally from the United States, he had moved to Ontario in 2004 and was a widower, relying on personal support workers for his care. Investigators noted that initial reports suggested Lambert may have returned to the U.S., but no evidence supported this claim.
Detective Inspector Serge Acay noted the importance of community assistance in these cases, announcing a $50,000 reward for information that could lead to an arrest in Lambert’s disappearance. A similar reward has also been established for Bertrim’s case.

The ongoing investigation has understandably left the Montague community shaken. Karen Jennings, the reeve for Montague Township, expressed her condolences and concern over the recent discoveries. In a statement, she described the news as “heartbreaking” and acknowledged the distress it has caused among residents and families connected to the victims. Jennings assured the public that the OPP has indicated there is no current threat to community safety.
As the investigation continues, the heavily wooded property remains cordoned off by police, with officers on-site ensuring the area is secure while forensic teams conduct their work.
