In a decisive response to the alarming rise in antisemitic incidents across the UK, the government has unveiled a substantial investment of £250 million aimed at enhancing security within Jewish communities. This funding initiative is designed to ensure that individuals can practice their faith without fear, following a series of violent attacks that have raised concerns about public safety.
Significant Investment for Enhanced Security
The announcement comes in the wake of disturbing trends in hate crimes targeting Jewish individuals, notably including the stabbing of two men in Golders Green and an arson attack on a former synagogue in Whitechapel earlier this year. In response to these incidents, the national terror threat level was escalated to severe in April. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasised that combating antisemitism has been a priority throughout his leadership.
The £250 million investment will be allocated over three years, facilitating the deployment of more than 500 additional officers across England and Wales. London is set to receive the lion’s share of this funding, with 300 officers earmarked for the capital and 80 for Greater Manchester, alongside resources for other regions with notable Jewish populations.

Funding Allocation Across Regions
The funding distribution will see Greater Manchester Police receiving over £22 million to maintain heightened security following the recent synagogue attack. Additionally, around £43 million will be allocated to seven other police forces in areas with significant Jewish populations, such as Hertfordshire and Essex.
The Metropolitan Police will benefit from an £86 million boost, which will enhance national policing coordination and develop antisemitism training for officers throughout England and Wales. A further £41 million is designated for Counter-Terrorism Police, aimed at strengthening protective measures against state threats.
Policing Minister Sarah Jones commented on the situation, expressing her commitment to combatting antisemitism and ensuring safety for Jewish communities. “We will do everything in our power to rid society of the evil of antisemitism,” she stated.
